Throughout the past couple years I have undergone major changes in not only my style of painting but my conceptual interests. About two years ago my primary focus conceptually was the idea of dream sequences and the interpretation and perceptions of human consciousness. I conveyed this within my works of paint and drawing through the narrative. By exploring this new narrative direction I began taking on influences and inspiration from illustration and film. It became clear to me after several projects involving scenes of obscure figures, unusual objects, and dream-like explorations of reality, that I now could see my work gaining more interest in a different thought provoking conceptual area of interest to me- the mysteries of the natural world and the supernatural.
This has always been of great interest to me, and the dark unknown aspect of this idea filled my head as well as my sketchbook with many limitless possibilities. I have always been drawn to create narrative scenes within my paintings, and to tell a story, but through various explorations and studies of literature, film, history, and mythology I found a direction for my work that has awakened my imagination. My love for conceptual art of film making and the story telling process, as well as interest in illustration, translated into key influences for this direction of my painting series. Movements of art such as surrealism and genres of fantasy and horror have all played a role within my place with my paintings in this moment. I also continue this study by examining allegorical imagery and symbolic infusions that will relate to my chosen subject within the painting composition.
I have begun this process by applying major study to not only the figure, but the natural world and organic objects. Through light and color, my work tends to hold a darker quality and impression but it is with this visual aspect and my ideas conceptually that I hope to communicate with the viewer. This discovery and motivation behind my current work has also given me an intention to bring my viewer into a new strange world with every piece, and to evoke responses through the emotions and energy involved within the work.
